SE David Molina-Math - Affecting Rigor via Engagement and Discourse
We face three key changes in mathematics: the transition to the Common Core State Standards, a new assessment system as members of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), and a new commensurate accountability system aligned to the CCSS and PARCC assessments. These changes have one overarching and overwhelming attribute—they call on us to rethink our classrooms with respect to rigor. But, do we know how what increased rigor looks like? Do we know how to affect rigor in our classrooms and our schools? Do we even know what rigor is? Success on the PARCC assessments, in accountability, and with the CCSS, is going to demand a focused and profound attention to rigor in ways that are both unfamiliar and difficult. So, how do we respond to the call for an increase in rigor? Let’s take a look at constructs and strategies for affecting rigor by focusing rigor’s complements: engagement and discourse.
