NWAESC---Data Modeling

At the Data Modeling workshop, we will continue exploring innovative ways to support and assess the development of students’ statistical reasoning in the elementary and middle schools. As a result of last year’s collaboration between teachers in Northwest Arkansas and researchers from Vanderbilt University, Assessing Data Modeling (ADM) assessment system, including lessons, assessment items, scoring guides, and construct maps, have been revised to be more teacher-friendly in terms of content and format. Especially, the multimedia construct maps have incorporated Arkansas teachers’ teaching with ADM assessment system, and we will hope to expand this during the year. We will share the updated assessment system and a new version of TinkerPlots (the display and statistics software). Building upon last year’s experience with the assessment system, we will make collaborative efforts to find effective ways to use assessment for instructional purposes and improve instruction based on knowledge about how students think and develop statistical reasoning. Previous participants will deepen their knowledge about students’ understanding of statistics, and we hope that they will make contributions to the video examples in the assessment system. Newcomers will learn from veterans and from trying out the assessment system. This is a invitation only class. If all classes are attended, you will receive a total of 60 hours pd credit, with 20 of these hours counting toward educational technology.
