ARESC-ELLA - Year 1

Early Literacy Learning in Arkansas (ELLA) is a two (2)-year professional development designed to assist K-1 teachers and K-12 special education teachers. ELLA includes structures built for teachers to increase their knowledge and skill level in the area of research-based, data-driven, and developmentally appropriate instructional practices. It provides educators with foundational knowledge of the continuum of literacy learning systems development, and how to teach and support students along the continuum. This professional development is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and research findings provided by the National Reading Panel Report. It focuses on using appropriate assessments to inform systematic, explicit instruction. The training also provides participants with routines and procedures for organization, management, and implementation of comprehensive literacy. The two-year training consists of thirteen days, with six hours of professional development credit for each full day completed. Year one, the first four days (1-4) are completed in the summer. Days 5 and 6 are completed in the fall, and days 7 and 8 are in the spring. Year two, summer includes days 9-11. It concludes with day 12 in the fall and day 13 in the spring.
