Computer Science Praxis (5651) Preparation Institute at ASU Rural STEM Education Center



The Department of Computer Science at Arkansas State University is offering the Computer Science Praxis (5651) Preparation Institute to help 12 teachers prepare to pass the praxis test. Teachers of any grade level may apply to attend the institute. All books, materials, and parking fees will be paid for by the grant or the A-State Department of Computer Science. Teachers are responsible for their own mileage, lunches, and snacks. The grant will provide lodging at a Jonesboro hotel for 6 teachers, double-occupancy, who have to travel at least 60 miles to the institute.The grant will provide a $1250 stipend to teachers who, BEFORE JUNE 1, 2017, (1) complete the professional development, (2) attain the ADE Computer Science Endorsement or ADE Provisional License in Computer Science, and (3) are scheduled to support the instruction of one or more of the approved Act 187 courses through either face-to-face or hybrid instructional models for 2016-2017.Up to 84 hours of professional development can be earned by teacher participation in the institute.The 14-day institute dates are June 6-10 and 13-17, July 28-29, and two Saturdays during the school year (dates TBA). It is expected that participants will need to complete work outside of these 14 days in order to prepare for the praxis.

Teachers will need to complete a registration form after registering through escWorks. Dr. Julie Grady will send the form via email. Completion of the registration form is required for admittance into the institute. Mr. Jake Qualls, an experienced computer science instructor at A-State will be leading the instruction. Jake has taught Computer Organization, Software Engineering, Algorithms and Advanced Data Structures, and Operating Systems. He has also led the instruction for the 2014 Congressional App Challenge at Arkansas State University, which supported student programming teams from Northeast Arkansas schools. Jake has also been involved with ADE efforts to develop computer science curricula. He was a member of the ADE Curriculum Committee responsible for designing the Essentials of Computer Programming course.
