NAESC Introducing….the THEATRE!

Middle and high school ELA, theatre and/or dance teachers, especially from districts that do not currently have a theatre program, will enjoy a full day of professional development designed to get students in the ELA classroom on their feet, studying literature from a new perspective and getting excited about the study of theatre arts. Presenters will be teaching artist April Gentry Sutterfield from the Arkansas Arts Council Arts in Education roster and John O’Berski, theater instructor at Lincoln High School and Arkansas A+ fellow. The morning session will include theater and dance strategies such as devising, improvising, and creative movement to support the study of ELA content in English classes. Guidance will be provided in embedding theater standards into the ELA curriculum. The afternoon session will include a series of ways in which the interest generated from these activities in the ELA classroom can expand into launching a new theater and/or dance course offering or extracurricular program in schools that haven’t presented this opportunity in the past.
