NWAESC(2095)-Building Ambitious Thinking Mathematics Classrooms

In Arkansas, “ambitious” mathematics teaching is exemplified by supporting and facilitating student sense making, thinking, and reasoning so that students learn worthwhile mathematics and come to see themselves as contributing members of a mathematical community. Teaching this way is difficult and it takes skill, knowledge, and intentional planning to help students take ownership of their learning. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, author Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into a practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom. “Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12” helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. We will use Peter’s book and NCTM’s 8 Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices to help us grow our practice and increase student thinking and engagement in math classrooms. Participants will receive the book “Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12.
