GREC- Trauma-Invested Classroom

Based on the work of Kristin Souers and Pete Hall, this session will walk educators through what trauma-invested teachers do and how a trauma-invested classroom functions. Educators will develop a greater understanding of the impact of trauma on young children, how the impact can shape young people as they develop into adults, and how those impacts can impede a child’s ability to learn over the course of their development. A trauma-invested classroom provides both availability and accountability; an artful balance between firm and kind. This workshop helps educators to fully understand that balance and begins the mindset shift it will take for recommended strategies and interventions to be effective.
? Relate unwanted classroom behaviors to the fight, flight, freeze response to increase teacher sensitivity to possible trauma reactions.
? Teach and explain the hand model of the brain to peers in order to teach it to students.
? Examine scenarios to gain insight into personal responses to trauma and trauma reactions
from students.
? Identify and apply appropriate empathy statements to build solid rapport with students.
? Practice repairing fractured relationships through giving grace by making a contact, or a plan for contact.
