Building upon the work of Kylene Beers, Nell Duke, Timothy Shanahan, and the National Reading Panel, this seminar offers an exploration into the science of reading and its applicability to older students. Through a blend of direct instruction and collaborative discussion, participants will delve into the latest research and evidence-based practices that enhance literacy instruction for adolescents. Participants will gain insights into the cognitive processes underlying reading comprehension and vocabulary development in older learners, as well as learn strategies for effectively integrating these principles into instruction. Emphasizing the crucial role of literacy in academic achievement and lifelong success, this workshop will empower teachers with the knowledge and resources to better support their students as they become proficient readers and critical thinkers.
