SWAEC- Reframing History: Exploring Difficult Topics such as Forced Removal

This workshop is designed to explore different ways that the arts can support the exploration of difficult topics in social studies and history such as forced removal of Native American tribes. Artworks by Charles Bird King and Titus Kaphar will be used throughout this workshop as both conversation starters and inspiration for an art-making project. A Circle of Viewpoints activity (adapted from Harvard's Project Zero) is introduced, and specific examples are given on how, for the topic of forced removal, students can think through the situation through the lens of different Native American tribes and other individuals involved. Using Kaphar's artworks, specifically The Cost of Removal, participants will create their own work of art inspired by Kaphar's style that reframes history. There is time during and after the workshop for participants to share and get feedback from Arkansas A+ Fellows on how they can expand some of their own lesson plans to integrate art into curriculum to engage students. Through this professional development workshop: Teachers will walk away with specific ideas about how they can incorporate arts integration techniques into their classrooms; Teachers grow their comfort in using artworks to develop conversation around subject matter; Teachers will learn enriched assessment strategies that can be used to assess their assignments; Teachers will leave with tools that they can apply to their own classrooms immediately.
