OUR Section 504 and Dyslexia

This session, presented jointly by the State Dyslexia Unit and the Equity Assistance Center, will discuss the basics of Section 504 and how dyslexia could qualify a student for Section 504 services when the student does not qualify for an IEP. The presenters will discuss the definition of a disability in Section 504, the child find requirements, the process of qualifying and creating an accommodation plan, how dyslexia services fit into a Section 504 plan, and the role of the dyslexia specialists/interventionists on the Section 504 team and throughout the process.
Building off the basics of Section 504 from the morning, the Equity Assistance Center presenter will take District Section 504 coordinators deeper into the world of Section 504. We will discuss common issues that catch coordinators off-guard and common errors in the process and plan creation. We invite coordinators to bring with them their district policies, procedures, and documents for Section 504 as well as redacted copies of plans or other review documents from their districts to share with and get advice from the other coordinators in attendance. This session will be more of a question and answer, hands-on work session.
