This seminar provides an overview of content from first indigenous Americans through the Compromise of 1850; providing essential chronology, context, and thematic material for teachers of early American history.
Historical events examined include the establishment of Native Americans, European interests and their establishment of colonies in the Americas, colonial development and life, and the institution of slavery- when, where, with emphasis on historical, geographic, and economic forces which promoted the institution.
The “bonds of empire,” which tied the colonies to Great Britain and the unraveling of these bonds, which led to the American Revolution, will be investigated. From there, we will analyze the establishment of Articles of Confederation America, and the crises that led to the establishment of Constitutional America and constitutional government, the three branches of government, and the physical expansion of the nation. Numerous compromises in the nation’s early history, necessary to hold the fragile young nation together, compromises which were mostly framed by slavery, will be examined leading to the pivotal year and Compromise of 1850.
