Important Session Information:

The Role of School Boards as Community Leaders and Advocates for Schools

School board members must become community leaders and advocates for schools who inform the community about the state of education. The board must also take the lead in causing the community to intercede in support of students and their families so that students can succeed in their schoolwork. The role of school boards as community leaders and advocates for schools requires the development of a few clear and simple messages regarding the core business of schools and the beliefs that guide the district. This is why it is so important that the role of school boards be redefined. Indeed, redefining the role of school boards may be the key to transforming schools into learning organizations.

During this experience, school board teams will use the Message House technique to collaborate around developing collective community messages and to refine their community advocacy work in order to improve the clarity of the core business of schools. We anticipate some community messages developed will focus on creating local accountability systems. As there has been a lot of movement toward community-based accountability, we have invited John Tanner to present an update. As the founder of Test Sense, John has become a highly-regarded resource on the issue of community-based accountability and will be available to consult with school boards that need his advice.
