In the last 10 months over 400 Southwest Ohio educators have been certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid!
Why All Educators Should be Certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid:
This year 17.7% of high school students will seriously consider attempting suicide; 8.6% will attempt suicide; 2.5% of youth hospital visits will be the result of a suicide attempt. 22% of all U.S. youth will experience a mental health problem that will have a severe impact on their life. 50% of all mental disorders begin before age 14. Youth don’t know how to reach out for help. Adults are not aware of the mental health resources available in Southwest Ohio.
About Youth Mental Health First Aid:
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training program that has been adopted in 23 countries. Involving eight hours of intensive instruction and hands-on application, YMHFA teaches adults how to identify and assist a youth with a mental health problem. Utilizing a five-step action plan, participants learn how to access for risk of suicide or harm, listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help, and encourage self-help and other support strategies. In addition, participants are provided information on how to effectively navigate the youth mental health resources available in Greater Cincinnati.
Certified Youth Mental Health First Aiders leave training with a stand-alone, evidence-based, “toolkit” that provides the community with a common framework, language and knowledge-base to create and implement a support plan for youth experiencing a mental disorder or in crisis. Groups that have been certified in the past 10 months include: teachers and school administrators; school counselors and psychiatrists; school resource officers, nurses, parents, and faith-based groups.
