How Little Children Tell Us What's Inside

- Audience:  Early Childhood Teachers and Supervisors

Participants will:

  • be able to offer one example, from their own work, of developmental continuity, specifically connecting an early experience of loss or trauma with a known outcome in the development of a young child.
  • be able to write a description—hypothetical or from their own life or work—of problem behavior in a young child, along with an explanation of why, all things considered in the life of that child, the behavior makes sense.
  • be able to write one paragraph outlining the narrative of a particular child with whom he/she is acquainted, and connect the narrative to a particular present behavior of the child.
  • be able to describe how an early experience that is not "remembered" in verbal memory, can emerge to affect current experience.

Important Session Information:

In this workshop we will examine the new research into how children remember their experiences and adapt them-particularly those rooted in trauma and loss-and how that shows up in present-day behavior.

We will practice mentalization as a way of imagining the meaning of behavior, and conclude with the sorts of response to behavior (including noxious or unacceptable behavior) that will increase our efficacy as teachers and parents, while simultaneously increasing our attachment to the child.
