Data Retreat Milbank School District
The Data Retreat® process, as developed by Judy Sargent, enables district and schoo leadership teams to use their own data to drive their school improvement process. During a retreat, school teams engage in reflective collaboration focused on improved learning for all students. The reflection is based on studying relevant data sources, observing patterns in the data, and creating a meaningful route for effective school improvement.
The Data Retreat® process is organized into modules which enable groups to thoroughly and effectively study a school’s information. Modules include: Literacy, Math and Science, Safe and Healthy Schools, High School, Special Education, Early Learning, and English Language Learning.
Once a team determines which modules are a priority for examination, teams examine data through four lenses; student data, family and community data, professional practices data, and programs and structures data. Observations are made based on examination of data and hypotheses are generated. As the hypotheses are supported or discarded teams develop improvement goals, set objectives, and develop strategies which enable them to reach their goals.
Finally, teams roll out the findings to all staff and create a plan for progress monitoring, evaluation, and sustainability.
