Standards-based grading is a transformational strategy for any classroom. Implementing the practice in social studies, however, is a complicated process for many reasons. Students normally have little to no prior knowledge for pre-assessments to be worthwhile, standards have to be broken down into depth of knowledge levels, and activities have to be created to support and extend student thinking for each level of the standard. For these reasons, standards-based grading in social studies can seem impossible and overwhelming. In this session, teachers will be guided in creating, planning, and executing standards-based grading. These strategies provide more opportunities for differentiation, peer tutoring, and student ownership. Teachers will walk away feeling more comfortable and confident in using standards-based grading in their own classrooms. Kiah Eull will be the presenter of these sessions.
