Executive skills are task-oriented skills that underlie students’ ability to learn. Although seldom taught explicitly, many educators now see that students who are strong in these skills are more successful than those who aren't. This workshop will introduce the 11 executive skills featured in the “Smart but Scattered” model, will describe how these skills develop across childhood, and will give participants suggestions for school-based strategies for strengthening each skill across the grade levels. The presentation will present both class-wide strategies as well as an approach to designing interventions tailored to individual students.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this workshop, participants will:
1. Define the 11 executive skills in the Smart but Scattered model and differentiate between foundational and advanced skills.
2. Be able to identify strategies to strengthen each of the 11 executive skills in a developmentally appropriate way.
3. Learn how to make environmental modifications to support weak executive skills.
4. Learn how to design protocols for teaching executive skills.
5. Learn how to embed executive skills into daily lessons and classroom routines.
6. Learn a process for designing a “student-centered” intervention targeting problem situations associated with executive skill challenges.
