2025-2026-DESE-Hosting STEM Events: Bringing the Community in the School

Bringing the community in the school and integrating problem solving skills in the classroom are attributes of a model STEM school. STEM events in PreK-12 schools are an effective way to engage parents and community partners in STEM programming. This STEM workshop for preK-12 educators and school leaders will explore open ended, hands-on engineering challenges with real world contexts that schools can use to engage several groups of stakeholders. Activities range from 10 to 20 minutes and are ideal for family engagement nights, libraries, nature centers, recreation centers and afterschool programs. Youth Engineering Solutions (YES) STEM Event Activity Kits that will be shared include instructions, setup videos, posters, presentation slides and hands on materials for up to 20 groups of 3-5 people. A portion of this workshop will be held outdoors.
