NWAESC---Phonics First® Foundations Level I (30 hours) Classroom Teachers K-3 and Special Ed. K-5

According to the International Dyslexia Association, the principles of instruction and content of a multisensory structured language (MSL) program are essential for effective teaching methodologies. This course meets the IDA standards as evidenced by our accreditation through the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC). Based on Orton-Gillingham methodology, this highly comprehensive course provides teachers with the essential strategies and tools to deliver high-quality MSL lessons using the Phonics First® Foundations curriculum. Because MSL is diagnostic in nature, teachers of reading have the ability to monitor student’s progress quickly in addition to using their own formal and informal assessment tools. Course content includes: alphabet and phonemic awareness strategies; tactile/kinesthetic spelling techniques for phonetic and non-phonetic words; syllabication for decoding multisyllable words; structured and systematic review of concepts; and guidance for lesson plans and classroom implementation. Participants have opportunities for hands-on lesson practice with other participants. Emphasis is on teaching reading to beginning, struggling, learning disabled students including dyslexia or other specified learning disorders.
