SCSC-Empowering Writing: Expository Writing for Grades 6-8



This workshop is geared for any teacher responsible for teaching expository writing with a focus on grades 6-8. Participants will tackle a variety of expository writing challenges: • informational essay/report, the “how to” piece, literary analysis, compare contrast, response to text • explore opportunities for analyzing the organizational structure of the expository essay • learn how to improve close strategic reading skills • practice research and note-taking strategies • create clear, concise topic sentences • write a variety of powerful supporting details • learn specific strategies for crafting strong introductions with attention-grabbing leads • construct conclusions in which main ideas are creatively restated • receive powerful exemplars of expository writing for classroom use. TESS components addressed for this workshop include: 1A, 1E, 3B, & 3C.

Important Session Information:


For member districts of the SCSC Professional Development Consortium the fee has been waived. All other participants will pay the listed fee including Nurses and Paraprofessionals. All professional development (PD) sessions require a minimum number of participants. If the minimum number is not met; the PD session will be canceled two weeks prior to the event. Registrants for the session will be notified by email (the address tied to escWorks). In the event that an individual cannot attend the session for which he/she registered, it is the individual’s responsibility to cancel using his/her escWorks shoebox. Cancellations may take place up to the day before the session(s). All "no-shows" will be invoiced the full price of the session(s) not attended. No credit will be awarded until the fee is paid. Please note that manuals are available in the following grade bands: 6-8.
