SCSC-Setting Your Paraprofessional up for Success

We all need extra hands in our classrooms and we all have students who need additional supports or interventions. It’s such a blessing when we actually get to have a paraprofessional, Americorp worker, aide, or grandparents that can work with students to help them and to give them strategies for success in the classroom. In this one day workshop, we will learn strategies from Dr. Jed Baker’s book, “School Shadow Guidelines” that you can implement on the first day of school. Dr. Baker has worked with children with autism for the past 25 years and has excellent ideas on how to help ALL students be successful. He uses the terms “School Shadow”, “Aide”, and “Paraprofessional” interchangeably. His strategies for students on the autism spectrum work for ALL students. However, the strategies we use for all students, don’t work at all for students with autism, ADHD, and other exceptionalities. Come prepared to think outside the box, make simple changes, and learn how to make simple tasks that your paraprofessional can use. No more sending the para into the hall with the worksheet of the day expecting students with challenges to “get it”. This is simply put, “Differentiated Instruction”. All students don’t need and can’t independently do the worksheet of the day; however, all students can learn. Some just need it presented a different way. Day two of the workshop we will take a look at student behavior and how to avoid “meltdowns” in the classroom. We’ve all experienced the student that simply refused to comply and his/her behavior escalated into a full blown meltdown. I will offer you strategies to recognize the warning signs of an upcoming meltdown and the tools to head it off before it happens. Come learn how to get prepared for a successful school year with ALL of your students! TESS components addressed for this workshop include: 2B, 2C, 2E, and 3C.
