OUR Empowering Writing: Expository Writing for Grades 6-8



This workshop is geared for any teacher responsible for teaching expository writing with a focus on grades 6-8. Participants will tackle a variety of expository writing challenges: • informational essay/report, the “how to” piece, literary analysis, compare contrast, response to text • explore opportunities for analyzing the organizational structure of the expository essay • learn how to improve close strategic reading skills • practice research and note-taking strategies • create clear, concise topic sentences • write a variety of powerful supporting details • learn specific strategies for crafting strong introductions with attention-grabbing leads • construct conclusions in which main ideas are creatively restated • receive powerful exemplars of expository writing for classroom use

This session most closely relates to the following TESS Components: 1a, 1e, 3a, 3b, 3c, and 3d. Lunch will be provided. Participants need to be registered by Monday, June 12 to allow for the ordering of participant manuals. Lunch will be provided.
