ATU: Arkansas Economy and Agriculture
The economy of Arkansas has transformed over time, from a cotton-focused agrarian state in the late nineteenth century to a state dominated by service industries in the twenty-first century. Yet through its history, Arkansas has remained a comparatively poor state. This session focuses on modern economic trends in Arkansas, including examples of in-state regional growth and decline. The historical transformations of agriculture in Arkansas (and agriculture’s role in Arkansas’ historical economy) are also discussed. Particular attention is paid to the future economic prospects of the agricultural Delta, the Fortune 500 company-laden Northwest Arkansas region, and the state capital region around Little Rock.
