ATU: Geography of World War One Era Europe
The First World War was a revolutionary event in world history, overthrowing the three empires of the Central Powers and completely redrawing the map of Europe. This session focuses on the wider geographical connections of World War One in Europe, including an investigation of such topics as: the pre-war alliance system, the war theater in the east, trench warfare along the western front, and the new borders of Europe after Versailles – borders that contributed to another global war less than a generation later. The geographic “results” of World War I were not limited to Europe, however, as the course of war involved changing territories in the Pacific, the creation of the Soviet Union, the breakup of the Ottoman Empire.
