AFESC--AP Music Theory: Preparing Your Students for the Free Response Questions

For teachers of AP Music Theory. The Free Response Questions on the AP Music Theory exam encompass aural skills (sight-singing, melodic dictation, and harmonic dictation) as well as part-writing. These can be some of the greatest challenges for music theory students. Teaching these skills as facets of the whole, rather than a separate and discrete unit of study, strengthens the student’s grasp of music theory concepts and their applications. This session will offer practical strategies to help teachers develop their students’ aural and part-writing skills, including creative approaches on how to interweave these skills into the many other components of the music theory course. This session will also offer AP exam test-taking strategies and pointers to help you better prepare your students for the exam.
