There are big ideas in the study of
mathematics that connect elementary and secondary mathematics. Student
understanding of these ideas can be supported by the following progression:
*Solve real world problems involving
ratios using various representations. *Make sense of proportional
relationships. *Use functions to model
relationships between quantities using multiple representations.
In this session we will present FALs, tasks,
and problems for use in Middle School Mathematics to foster this progression. A
few of the topics will be: ratio and proportional reasoning; linear
relationships; and modeling. All topics will be addressed from a conceptual
point of view with a major emphasis placed on vertical alignment.
