AFESC--Making Number Talks Matter Grades 6-10

Although number talks are used frequently in Elementary Schools, they can be a quick way to unlock number sense for high school students as well.  The practice of number talks is one of the most powerful vehicles for helping students learn to reason with numbers. Number talks can best be described as classroom conversations around purposefully crafted problems that are solved mentally.  The problems in a number talk are designed to help students focus on number relationships and number theory.  Number Talks are five to fifteen minute classroom conversations around purposefully crafted problems that are solved mentally. Teachers can use student strategies as a way to assess what math their students are struggling with understanding. Students' number sense and mental math abilities are strengthened through this daily classroom practice.  This training will have helpful suggestions for teachers on how to implement number talks in their classrooms.
