WDMESC: Young Children's Mathematics

This professional development is driven by the same guiding principles of teaching and learning mathematics as is in Cognitively Guided Instruction with a focus on Pre-K through 1st grade. Participants will learn about the development of children’s mathematical thinking and attend to the details of children’s counting and problem-solving strategies in order to support and build from children’s intuitive understandings of mathematics. They will learn how to use children’s thinking to make decisions that will allow them to purposefully design or adapt instructional tasks and to intervene in the moment in ways that are responsive to the needs and understandings of each child.
