This professional development is designed for teachers who teach a Critical Reading or strategic Reading Course. However, all teachers are welcome to attend regardless of whether they teach those courses or not. Four different professional development days are offered; however, attendance is all four sessions is not required (but is strongly recommended).
Participants will:
- Explain how direct instruction in comprehension strategies improves comprehension
- Explain how the gradual release of responsibility model is essential to direct instruction in reading strategy acquisition
- Explain how oral reading fluency assessments are crucial in assessing students' decoding and comprehension
- Explain how oral language supports comprehension
- Explain how theoretical models of reading can inform reading instruction and assessment
Audience: Strategic Reading Course teachers and Critical Reading Course teachers. However, all middle school and high school teachers are welcome to attend.
