CRESC Novice Teacher SPED Cohort 2-- VIRTUAL
The Novice Special Education Teacher Program is designed to provide support, mentoring and professional learning for special education teachers with three years or less of teaching experience in special education. A lot of research on novice teacher programs has indicated clearly that the support, mentoring and professional learning for novice special education teachers is very different from the needs of novice general education teachers. This program will focus on:
•highly effective specially designed instruction
•best practices to support inclusion, collaborative lesson planning and instruction integrated across special and general education
•universal design for learning and universal instruction
•behavior supports integrated into instruction to increase student engagement and self-control
•IEPs that are standards aligned with general education grade level standards
•using the problem-solving process when instruction and supports are not effective
•how to use best practices in virtual instruction for students with disabilities
•best practices to support academic and behavioral/social-emotion success following the impact of COVID-19 (re-entry strategies).
The final agenda for the 2020-2021 program will be developed collaboratively with the teachers who will be participating. Pre-program needs assessments and social networking will occur prior to the first day of the program.
Each participant in the program will be assigned a mentor from the first Novice Special Education Teacher Program cohort and will have the opportunity to connect with that mentor through a specially designed website. In addition, the participants will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual “community of practice” with all of the participants in the program to share
