The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which are the foundation of the AR K-12 Science Standards, represent the largest conceptual shift in teaching science in decades. The addition of design and an increased emphasis on the practices of science could revolutionize science education. However, this revolution will only occur if teachers understand the standards and make changes in their classrooms. In this workshop, Paul Andersen will guide you on a dynamic journey through the standards while giving you concrete examples that can transform your science classroom immediately.
3-Dimensional Scientific Inquiry
The morning will focus on the classroom. Teachers will gain a better understanding of 3-Dimensional instruction as they engage in scientific inquiry around authentic phenomena. Teachers will experience the Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices and the Crosscutting Concepts from the position of a student. Most importantly teachers attending will learn how to teach science by doing science.
Performance Assessments and 3-Dimensional Planning
The afternoon will focus on student evidence of learning. Teachers will view, screen, and improve exemplar performances assessments aligned to the new standards. Teachers will then use backward design to plan learning activities that will build to these assessments. Mini-lessons will be added as a tool for explicit instruction around conceptual thinking.
