WDMESC: “Legend of the Cranes” Origami

According to Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, everyone has different types of learning styles to help them comprehend new information.  Kinesthetic Learning is one of those styles. Kinesthetic or physical learning requires the learner to be hands on in order to understand the process and retain information. Many people prefer to learn while doing. Being active while learning, like pacing while reading, aids in the retention of new information.
In this workshop, participants will view the movie, “Sadako and a Thousand Paper Cranes” (literacy), and note the illustrations during the narration (elements and principles of art). A PowerPoint will be shared that highlights the effects of the bombing of Hiroshima (history). A discussion will follow regarding the catalyst events of the storyline which will culminate with Sadako Sasaki and the making of a paper crane. Participants will learn how to make the
“Legend of the Cranes” paper crane (math, vocabulary, elements and principles of art). Opportunities will be provided for participants to use designs and color on their cranes. This project allows students to take an active role in a story by physically creating something as the main character did. This project is best for grades 4 - 12.
