NAESC Designing Authentic and Meaningful STEM Experiences within the Literacy Block (K-2)

This professional development opportunity will engage teachers as learners in processes and mindsets leading to meaningful STEM experiences. Teachers will learn the importance of anchoring STEM learning in authentic and relevant problems based on phenomena to find solutions and how the components of the literacy block can be utilized for students to engage in STEM learning. Integral to the process is grounding students in explicit and continuous socio-emotional and equitable attention to the population whose needs are central to the problem, which is the foundation of successful solutions. Participants will engage in problem-based design processes and discourse that naturally lend themselves to developing attributes such as innovativeness, creativity, logical thinking, cooperative collaboration, and empathy: all skills necessary for success in a rapidly changing global society.
