AFESC--To Be or Not to Be: Rethinking the Literary Canon in Secondary Classrooms - Virtual Session

There is much controversy surrounding whether teachers should abandon the literary canon in 21st Century classrooms. During this session, we will weigh the pros and cons of teaching classical literature and discuss the implications of reading culturally diverse texts in the secondary English classroom.

Participants will:
- Recognize positive and negative features of common literary canonical texts.
- Understand how to incorporate diverse literature without fully abandoning classic texts.
- Develop an awareness of culturally diverse works to incorporate in lessons.
- Examine the impact voice and choice have on student engagement and academic success
