A pivotal challenge in problem solving and mathematical reasoning is attending to the comprehension and decoding of academic vocabulary. AR RISE and Mathematics will combine to equip secondary mathematics educators in integrating literacy based standards and evidenced-based best practices to increase reading. Participants will learn practical, time-saving practices for direct vocabulary instruction in Greek and Latin roots as well as routines for supporting struggling readers. Participants will walk away from this workshop with a solid plan for how to improve academic vocabulary, reading, and justification/explanation in the mathematics classroom.
