OUR Let's Get Clear About Learning: Determining Essential Standards

“When everything is important, then nothing is.” Teachers are faced with the enormous responsibilities of teaching, assessing, intervening, and differentiation for all students on a daily basis. It is unrealistic to believe that teachers can teach every standard and that all students will grasp the content and skills they need each year. All standards are not equally important, nor do all standards need the same level of intensity dedicated to them each year. Educators need to move away from teaching standards that are “an inch deep and a mile wide” in hopes that students will have what they need as they progress through the K-12 system. Certain standards should be prioritized and assessed with the outcome being mastery by all students. Prioritizing standards leads to higher quality assessments and is critical in identifying those students in need of intervention or enrichment. During this session, participants will work collaboratively to understand how to identify the “essentials” and how those standards fit into the Professional Learning Community (PLC), Response to Intervention (RTI), and Common Formative Assessment (CFA) process that ensures learning for all.
