The purpose of this half day training is to orient educators to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and how this Civil Rights law is distinguished from the special education law (IDEA). Particular attention will be given to the following:
- educators' responsibility to identify students who may qualify for 504 support;
- comparison between 504's "substantial limitation" and IDEA's "adverse affect";
- description of "life activities" that may be impacted by a 504-qualifying condition
- accommodations that educators can implement to support students who qualify for 504 supports.
