WDMESC: That’s Why He Does That! Now What Do I Do? Understanding, Preventing and Responding to Challenging Behavior of Students with ASD

This workshop will begin by exploring the challenges and characteristics of autism spectrum disorder and their relationship to common underlying functions of challenging behavior. The presenter will share case studies and examples to help participants look for the functions of challenging behavior and connect challenges with communication with problem behavior. Focus will be paid to helping participants match hypothesis statements to data collected and develop strategies for the behavior support program that are based on the results of the FBA. These hypothesis statements will help participants look at the context in which the challenging behaviors occur and help to suggest strategies to prevent the behaviors from occurring and skills the student needs to learn to replace the behaviors’ function for the future. Using those contextual statements, the speaker will review how changes to the environment and teaching strategies can prevent challenging behavior from occurring. Next replacement strategies to be taught that serve the same function as those noted in the behavioral hypotheses will be reviewed with strategies for teaching them practically in the classroom. And finally, the presentation will focus on methods for responding to challenging behaviors when they occur. Video clips and case studies will be used throughout the presentation as examples. Following this workshop, participants will be able to: Access and use a hypothesis statement graphic organizer to develop hypothesis statements based on FBA data collected in the classroom that leads to developing behavioral support plans. Identify common functions of challenging behavior frequently observed in classrooms with students with ASD. Describe an example of a communication replacement behavior that could be implemented within the context of a classroom.

Important Session Information:

Following the workshop continued:

Describe an example of a communication replacement behavior that could be implemented within the context of a classroom.

Outline 2 environmental antecedent strategies that may prevent challenging behaviors from occurring in the classroom.

Describe a responsive strategy that can be used to reduce the likelihood of reinforcing the behavior while also decreasing the impact of the behavior on the classroom.
