NWAESC(2095)-Folk Art for the k-12 Classroom

Folk Art is an art style that feels more attainable and less intimidating to many students and teachers, so it can be an ideal gateway for the reluctant student artist. In Folk Art for the k-12 Classroom, teaching artist Elly Bates will use Folk Art to engage teachers in a process that starts with the history of folk art--looking at examples of people, places, objects and patterns. Taking inspiration from those images, Bates will lead teachers to create their own examples of folk art that will be as accessible for general learners as it will be for art students. With a special focus on including writing, teachers will look at folk art through the lens of illustration in this hands on, project based workshop. This workshop is perfect for art teachers, gifted teachers, librarians, and any teacher who engages students in a writing process.
