SCSC-Student Engagement and Emotional Poverty

There are pages of research to support the impact of poverty on student engagement in schools. Traditionally, poverty has been viewed in the form of financial poverty; students whose basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter are not being met in their current environment. Emotional poverty has recently emerged as a topic of interest for educators, in large part due to Dr. Ruby Payne’s focus in this area. Emotional Poverty is found across all demographics, and certainly in this “post-Covid” world, can impact any student in your classroom. TESS: 1a, 1b, 4c
