AFESC-Powerful Practices

Powerful practices grow secondary readers. Do you want to help all of your students grow as readers in your subject area? Are you especially concerned about your students who struggle to read your content area text independently? Are you unsure how to include all of your students in the reading of text? If so, this is the course for you. You will not only learn how secondary students acquire words, but you will also learn how you can facilitate word acquisition and growth in your subject area. These high impact templates can be used with any curriculum. If you have already attended professional development on close reading templates, this new session spends more time on how to follow the gradual release of responsibility, how to scaffold the learning for all students, and how to easily differentiate so you secure buy-in from all of your students. We will also touch upon assessments and how to get students involved in tracking their own data. These practices are equally powerful for intervention groups and critical reading students; this course comes with access to ready-made high impact curriculum that models the powerful practices.

This session will address instructional strategies most appropriate for the following levels of instruction:

Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3
