NWAESC(2095)-Yes! Older Students Need Picture Books Too

It’s the first day of school. You’re a little anxious to make a good impression and the students are nervous, chatty, or half asleep. You take a deep breath, smile, and take out a picture book. As you begin reading, notice the students lean in to hear you and see the pictures as you read. Suddenly, you realize you have everyone’s attention. Picture books disappear as students move up the grades until by the time they are in junior high, this type of reading is all but obsolete. Storytelling is a wonderful way to create an inclusive classroom environment. In this morning session, you will be introduced to the use of picture books as a way to lessen anxiety, create opportunities where all students can participate in discussion and scaffold students’ understanding of complex themes prior to a novel study. There are many benefits to sharing story books with older students. Start your day with storytime and take home multiple strategies you can use with your favorite picture books.
