DSC Learning from Archeology in Arkansas (Cancelled)

This workshop with the Arkansas Archeological Survey will cover a brief history of archeology in Arkansas and the pre- and post-contact archeological record. We will then go over lessons and give out supplementary supplies for teaching the Gathering, Gardening, and Agriculture social studies curriculum that was created by the Survey. This curriculum follows changes in plant use and human innovation in planting and domestication from Arkansas’s earliest history through colonization (8000 BCE – ~1900 CE). The curriculum can be used for a range of grade levels (5-8th grades) and can also be used in science lessons as many of the concepts, such as measuring and map-making, plant domestication, resource management, etc., cross the social studies/science line. We will also discuss lesson plans for the Survey’s loanable Raw Materials Boxes that can be borrowed and used by any teachers. We will also discuss the current archeological research happing in SW Arkansas. Any teacher who attends this training will be invited to visit the active excavation site and field lab that the Archeological Survey is running in DeQueen free of charge to see archeology in action, but visiting the field location is not a requirement of the training.
