NEA - "Don't Play POSSUM" - Strategic Reading, Day 5of 5
Clear, effective communication is no simple task—it requires an understanding of phonology, orthography, syntax, semantics, and morphology. For many students, this complexity leads to playing possum when it’s time to plan, research, and write. As Maryanne Wolf describes in Proust and the Squid, the brain’s natural tendency to avoid effort can make writing a challenge.
In this session, participants will engage in sentence-level writing activities designed to strengthen effective communication as a measure of grade-level comprehension and vocabulary usage. Through intentional practice, we’ll explore ways to help students move beyond avoidance and build confidence in their writing.
Note: Participants should bring a digital device, HQIM, pacing guides, and any other materials needed to plan for an upcoming module.
