DSC Teaching About the Holocaust

This workshop is designed to assist participants to engage with and think critically about the crucial questions: why, what, and how to teach their students about the Holocaust. The workshop’s target audience includes teachers of students in grades 5-12 (as mandated by Arkansas statute to teach about the Holocaust). In structure, this workshop will include discussion, images, video clips, text and other resources to prepare and enable participants to teach their students about this watershed event in human history. • The workshop is sufficiently broad and detailed as to serve as a resource and to address the needs of those teaching about the Holocaust to Jr. High and High School students in Social Studies, History, Literature, Art or related classes. • Participants will be introduced to recommended works of film and literature in both fiction and non-fiction. Participants will also gain familiarity with respected international Holocaust scholars, museums, and websites. They will gain understanding of the value of first person accounts when teaching about the Holocaust; workshop participants will also develop skills in evaluating Holocaust-related materials and activities. • This workshop also includes sufficient elements to enable participants to craft age-and strategy- appropriate elements of Holocaust study, including for students in grades 5-6.  Presenter: Dr. Jan Ziegler
