AFESC-Stop Teaching Skills, Start Building Readers: Text-Centered Comprehension (Audience: K-5 teachers)
Move beyond skill-based checklists and transform your approach to reading instruction by centering high-quality, complex texts that build knowledge and address standards effectively. This session focuses on deepening comprehension through three interconnected strategies: strategically using texts from your high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) as the anchor for instruction, leveraging writing as a powerful tool for students to demonstrate and deepen their understanding, and employing explicit syntax instruction to help students navigate challenging sentence structures. Participants will explore how these approaches work together to move students beyond basic decoding toward genuine comprehension and engagement with complex texts. Leave with practical techniques and resources you can implement immediately to strengthen reading instruction in your classroom.
