DSC Section 504: Demystifying the “Other Special Education”

This one-day professional development workshop is designed for teachers, administrators, counselors, and other school personnel who play a role in supporting students with disabilities. The session provides a clear, practical overview of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act—what it is, who it serves, and how it differs from special education under IDEA. Participants will gain a solid understanding of schools’ legal responsibilities and the rights of students and families under Section 504.
Through real-world examples, case studies, and guided discussion, the workshop focuses on how Section 504 works in day-to-day school practice. Topics include identification and eligibility, evaluation procedures, developing and implementing effective 504 plans, documenting decisions, and ensuring accommodations are meaningful and consistently applied. Special attention is given to common compliance pitfalls and how to avoid them.
