DSC Special Education Law: Making it Work in Schools

This full-day professional learning workshop is designed for general education teachers, special education teachers, administrators, counselors, paraprofessionals, and related-service personnel who want to strengthen special education practices and improve outcomes for all students. Participants will explore how special education works best when legal compliance, effective school culture, and strong collaboration come together. The workshop provides a practical overview of special education legal basics, including IDEA requirements, IEP development and implementation, roles and responsibilities, and common compliance pitfalls—presented in plain language and grounded in real school scenarios. Participants will gain clarity on how to meet legal obligations while keeping student needs at the center of decision-making. In addition, the session emphasizes the importance of a supportive and inclusive school culture. Attendees will examine how mindsets, communication, and shared responsibility across general and special education impact student success. Strategies for effective collaboration among staff, problem-solving as teams, and supporting paraprofessionals and related-service providers will be highlighted. The workshop also focuses on meaningful parent and family engagement. Participants will learn practical approaches for building trust with families, conducting effective meetings, navigating difficult conversations, and fostering partnerships that support student growth both at school and at home.
By the end of the day, participants will leave with a stronger understanding of special education foundations, actionable strategies they can apply immediately, and a shared vision for making special education work effectively within their schools—for compliance, collaboration, and, most importantly, student success.
