WDMESC: Archeology in the Classroom
This workshop with the Arkansas Archeological Survey (ARAS), will be held at Plum Bayou Mounds Archeological State Park in Scott, AR, which will be hosting an active archeological excavation during this workshop. Archeologists with the ARAS will take teachers through a timeline of Arkansas history (~14,000 years ago through the present) and discuss how archeology has helped us to learn about all of the people who have lived in our state. In the morning we will get a background about archeology and the history of the Plum Bayou Mounds archeological site and go on a tour of the open excavations. Teachers will get a chance to see archeologists at work and ask questions about how the process works. We will then go through archeology-based lesson plans and curriculum written by the ARAS. The ARAS will provide physical copies of our Gathering, Gardening, and Agriculture curriculum was well as links to resources on our website, and information about loanable resource boxes that we have available for use. In the afternoon we will hear from the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer of the Quapaw Nation (the Native American people descended from the people who built the Plum Bayou Mounds) about Quapaw Nation history in the region. Teachers will also get the chance to work in the field laboratory washing and sorting artifacts that have recently been excavated from the site. This workshop is being hosted with support from The Institute for Heritage Education, who has granted us money to give a
$75 stipend to the first 10 teachers who sign up
for the workshop to help cover travel and food costs. The workshop is also supported by the Arkansas Archeological Society, who is waiving all fees associated with participating in the field and lab work for the day.
