OUR Sensory Processing in Young Children: Play Your Way to Positive Learning and Behavior - Part 1&2 (Hands On)



Part 1: Overview of how the brain processes sensory input, different types of stimuli, and their effects on the nervous
system. Topics include sensory processing disorders, children most vulnerable to them, including children with disabilities and those who have experienced trauma, and how sensory challenges are often mistaken for willful or noncompliant behavior. The session aims to reframe how we interpret young children’s behavior while sharing real-world examples and effective sensory support strategies.
Part 2: Active exploration of a multitude of sensory materials and toys. A wide variety of these items will be displayed for participants to experience. Information will be provided on how they can be used to support children. Participants will be given time to work in groups to develop a “sensory diet” for a child or children they support. Participants will present their plans for group input and discussion. Time will
be provided for individual questions and problem solving.
